Locally handmade, these wooden lids are an economical and food-safe option for covering fermentation crocks. They allow necessary air exchange and the ability to weight down the contents during the fermentation process. The loose fit and accessibility of these lids make them a practical choice for home fermentation. Made from unfinished poplar that is 3/4" thick and planed to a smooth surface, these lids are designed to protect foodstuffs stored in pickle crocks. It is important to note that the lids are not airtight due to the handmade nature of the crocks, which are not perfectly round. Therefore, it is recommended to use a good quality wood preserver before and periodically after using the lids.
